Levels Of Detail Podcast: Thinking With Alcohol Edition (04.23.11)

Games and Gaming, News

So, you might have heard about this game that came out this week, Portal 2. We wish we could blame all of our tardiness on that, but really, it was the foul invasion of Real Life into our little bacchanalian world of beer and gaming that caused the delay. However, we have Podcast for you regardless!

This week, we bemoan the prevalence of idiots on the Internet, both regarding the “backlash” against Portal 2 and the wild storm of rumors surrounding a supposed Wii 2 E3 debut, celebrate clever ways of defeating piracy, discuss the limited information about Prey 2, and promote PC Gamer’s debut of a 90 minute time-limited demo for Minecraft (which you can download here). Please, share and enjoy, and let us know what you think at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Digging Ever Deeper Edition

Games and Gaming, News, Retrospectives

Hello! We have another show for you today, as is our wont. As the gaming industry has seen fit to try to starve poor us out of a podcast (starve, I say!), we have had to search long, hard and deep for today’s news. But we have triumphed! The fruits of our labor include Minecraft finally getting a strange new feature called a “release date”, the Navy has a new game for all you sub sim fans out there, we ruminate on an anniversary most ignominious, the Sesame Street game seems to be angling to resurrect your childhood and make you cry in a most awesome way, and then, starved for content, we talk about cars and semi-random gaming news for the remaining 10 minutes. Interesting! Illuminating! Entertaining, even (we hope)! All this and more in this week’s episode of the Levels Of Detail Podcast. Please, share and enjoy, and talk back at us at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Sinus Congestion Edition (02.21.11)

Games and Gaming, News

Today’s delayed podcast is brought to you by the inside of Ben’s sinuses. Poor Ben is now unconscious, having cracked open a couple of diphenhydramine tablets and rubbed the contents into his nasal passages. Hopefully, he can actually breathe now, or at least not suffocate in his own fluids as he sleeps.

Tonight’s podcast brings us news that there will be a Medal of Honor sequel after all, in case you thought EA would just abdicate the Call of Duty market to Activision, Telltale Games has now successfully licensed all films past, present and future, someone hit the “Launch” button on Bioshock 2 DLC a little early, the piracy wars continue and we wonder when the Navy SEALs will put a stop to the jackasses in the PS3 hacking community. Plus, we discuss difficulty in gaming and whether or not there’s really a crisis of oversimplification. Please, share and enjoy, and say rude things about our humble little podcast at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Deep Seated Issues Edition (02.17.11)

Games and Gaming, News

I apologize for the late hour of this posting, ladies and gentlemen, my reasons are many, varied, and do not exculpate me from the late status of the podcast. Anyway! Yesterday’s podcast features the debut of the Sony Xperia Play, aka the Playstation Phone, and other Sony-related news, a game you probably forgot was even in development is now in development no longer while another game might be coming back from the dead, we actually agree with Michael Pachter for a change, and then I rant extensively about Apple, the film industry, and why games should focus on being games, not movies. Please, share and enjoy. If you feel the need to berate me for my tardiness, please do so at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: The Day The Music Died Edition (02.10.11)

Games and Gaming, News

It is a dark week for old tired music game franchises, as Activision has shuttered their music games division and halted all development on Guitar Hero and all its DLC. Harmonix is also hit with layoffs, and so it seems like the lean times for music games are finally taking their toll on developers. Also on the show this week, big leaks on Battlefield 3, Sony proceeds to try to sue anyone with an Internet connection and get in a whole mess of other legal troubles, we discuss PR material from LA Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Fox News surprises us all by living down to their reputation, and we discuss the cold shower that is sex in gaming. Levels Of Detail Podcast: Football Hangover Edition (02.06.11)

Games and Gaming, News

Yes, the date at the top is a day late. There were some planned new ideas that did not pan out in time, but soon! Soon, new shiny will be among us. I blame football, as I do for nearly everything, independent of season. We now have a place for all fifteen of you who listen to the show to hurl abuse at us in private! Or maybe constructive criticism or possibly compliments, if that’s your style. Please, email us at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com, and tell us how we’re doing and mock us for our tardiness. It’s the only way we’ll learn.

In today’s delayed podcast, we talk about the utter dearth of information imparted by the new Battlefield 3 teaser, Valve is making enough money to buy and sell all of us, we think back on the monster success of the PS2, Microsoft caves in to our demands, game movie news that doesn’t involve Uncharted, I’m alternatively mean and complimentary to Canada, then geek out about an upcoming Android game, and as we found ourselves with some spare time, we dive deep into our navels and talk about beer for ten minutes. Why we drink it, and why it’s something we can all be proud of as Americans. Oh, and Canadians. We don’t mention it, but Unibroue makes some badass beer too. Please, enjoy.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Brought to You By Four Loko Edition (02.03.11)

Games and Gaming, News

I’m sure that you, dear listeners, know that sometimes what seems like a good idea can turn out to be a catastrophically poor notion in hindsight. It might seem like an amusing idea: during the podcast, drink an entire 32 ounce can of Four Loko, the recently-banned alcoholic energy drink (because 12% ABV and enough caffeine to eclipse a tallboy of Red Bull certainly sounds healthy). After the first drink brought back memories of other mistakes I’ve made in the past, namely drinking raw fruit punch concentrate at summer camp, I could tell that this would bring nothing but pain. When Ben heard my suffering, supporting co-host that he is, he decided that forcing me to take big swigs from that accursed can every so often would be an amusing idea. I hope you’re all happy.

My pain and suffering aside, we bring you news of British studies proving that those damn yoofs are going to kill us all, shady IP law practices on Blizzard’s part, the potential of the Playstation Move on the PC, the enhugening of Batman: Arkham City, playing games with your daughter might make her a better person, Michael Phelps is bringing his slick naked glory to the Kinect, Treyarch complains about how we’re all big meanies, Apple flicks their customers in the ear again, and much more. Please, enjoy my pain, you cruel bastards.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Technical Difficulties Edition (01.30.11)

Games and Gaming, News

Ah, Ben has now returned to his proper residence in Goleta, which means that his side of the podcast will no longer be transmitted by carrier pigeons. One would think this would free us from technical issues (pigeons are a notoriously unreliable way of sending Skype traffic), but you would be mistaken! We struggled mightily through various sound-related issues, but we have persevered, and have managed to bring you a somewhat dented and scuffed-up version of the Levels Of Detail Podcast.

For this edition, we properly cover the launch of the new Sony handheld console, the NGP (née PSP2), Ben talks about Magicka for a bit, more Sony news bits about the PS3’s upcoming firmware updates and why you should care, Activision actually does something pretty cool, we bitch about video game movies and what we two entertainment industry powerhouses think should be make the leap from console to big screen, and cap it off with some idle thoughts about the possible fate of the game demo. Please, enjoy.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Vacationing as a Popsicle Edition (01.04.11)

Games and Gaming, News

Well, I fear it is time for me to say those dreaded words for all of you: the Levels Of Detail Podcast is going on break. I’m off to Europe for a vacation for the next week or so, and so in that time, there will unfortunately be no podcast. I have made arrangements with the gaming industry to release no news of any import while we’re away, so don’t worry about missing anything from us.

However, while we’ve got you here, why not listen to this brand new podcast? We’ve got the preliminary results from Child’s Play 2010, our collective hard-on for Bulletstorm grows ever larger, the Kinect clones are coming, Harmonix might be in more trouble than we think (or none at all), and we gaze deep into our navels regarding explosive barrels and the preferred coloration thereof and why Minecraft hit the right buttons to become a smash hit. Enjoy, and we will talk at you again in two weeks.
