Levels Of Detail Podcast: Deep Seated Issues Edition (02.17.11)

Games and Gaming, News

I apologize for the late hour of this posting, ladies and gentlemen, my reasons are many, varied, and do not exculpate me from the late status of the podcast. Anyway! Yesterday’s podcast features the debut of the Sony Xperia Play, aka the Playstation Phone, and other Sony-related news, a game you probably forgot was even in development is now in development no longer while another game might be coming back from the dead, we actually agree with Michael Pachter for a change, and then I rant extensively about Apple, the film industry, and why games should focus on being games, not movies. Please, share and enjoy. If you feel the need to berate me for my tardiness, please do so at LODpodcast@LevelsOfDetail.com.

Levels Of Detail Podcast: Brought to You By Four Loko Edition (02.03.11)

Games and Gaming, News

I’m sure that you, dear listeners, know that sometimes what seems like a good idea can turn out to be a catastrophically poor notion in hindsight. It might seem like an amusing idea: during the podcast, drink an entire 32 ounce can of Four Loko, the recently-banned alcoholic energy drink (because 12% ABV and enough caffeine to eclipse a tallboy of Red Bull certainly sounds healthy). After the first drink brought back memories of other mistakes I’ve made in the past, namely drinking raw fruit punch concentrate at summer camp, I could tell that this would bring nothing but pain. When Ben heard my suffering, supporting co-host that he is, he decided that forcing me to take big swigs from that accursed can every so often would be an amusing idea. I hope you’re all happy.

My pain and suffering aside, we bring you news of British studies proving that those damn yoofs are going to kill us all, shady IP law practices on Blizzard’s part, the potential of the Playstation Move on the PC, the enhugening of Batman: Arkham City, playing games with your daughter might make her a better person, Michael Phelps is bringing his slick naked glory to the Kinect, Treyarch complains about how we’re all big meanies, Apple flicks their customers in the ear again, and much more. Please, enjoy my pain, you cruel bastards.

iPhone end call button

Games and Gaming

The marvellous parody ‘end call’ sticker for the iPhone? Well, now they’re really for sale on etsy.

Slightly more seriously, the free case program is now in full swing. iPhone 4 owners who already bought a Bumper from Apple or AT&T can get a refund, while those who haven’t gotten one can choose between a free Bumper or a selection of third-party cases.

Mario Hates Apples

I asked Nintendo something that, though ridiculous, I know we’ve all wondered at some point: “Theoretically, could you ever imagine selling a Nintendo game in an app store—either Apple’s or Google’s.” Their answer? No.

From Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive VP of sales and marketing:

“You know, I really can’t. Our intellectual property like Mario like Zelda—those are just our crown jewels.”

While Nintendo could almost certainly fill the top 50 list of the App Store with their endless pile of IPs, their answer makes sense. Nintendo without proprietary hardware is not Nintendo.
